Overhead crane: designed and built to your specification

An overhead crane, also called a bridge crane or overhead travelling crane, runs on a runway below the roof and covers the whole floor area without taking up floor space. GD Gép és Daru Kft. has designed cranes for over 30 years and has built them in its own factory in Lajosmizse, Hungary, since 2001.

What is an overhead crane and when is it the right choice?

An overhead crane has one or two main girders that travel on two runways along the sides of the building. The trolley with the hoist travels across the bridge, so the load can reach any point of the hall.

An overhead crane is the right choice when:

  • heavy loads are handled regularly in production or storage,
  • the floor must stay clear for forklifts and production lines,
  • the whole hall needs to be served, not just one workstation.

If the building cannot carry a runway, or the work is outdoors, a gantry crane is the better solution.

GD overhead crane types

Single girder overhead crane

One main girder with a chain hoist up to 6.3 t or a wire rope hoist for heavier loads. Two-speed or stepless drives. The most economical option for medium loads.

Double girder overhead crane

The trolley runs on top of both girders. Spans up to 40 m and capacities up to 160 t, with walkways and platforms on request.

Corner trolley overhead crane

Chain hoist from 1 to 6.3 t on the side of the girder. No festoon cables (enclosed conductor rail), low-friction three-wheel trolley. More hook height in low buildings.

Underslung (suspension) crane

Suspended below the runway, up to 10 t (chain hoist up to 6.3 t, rope hoist up to 10 t). Can transfer into the neighbouring bay.

Low headroom double girder crane

1 to 6.3 t with the hoist set between the girders, for buildings where every centimetre of lift counts.

ATEX and cleanroom cranes

Hoists and cranes for explosive atmospheres and for cleanrooms.

Automatic cranes

Programmed handling without an operator for repetitive tasks.

How to choose an overhead crane

  • Capacity: the heaviest load including the lifting accessory.
  • Span: the distance between the two runway centre lines.
  • Height of lift and clear building height: in low buildings, a corner trolley or low headroom crane.
  • Duty: how often and with what loads the crane works.
  • Speeds and control: pendant or radio remote control.
  • Environment: ATEX zone, cleanroom, dust or outdoors.
  • Runway: existing, or to be built as well.

What does an overhead crane cost?

Capacity and span have the biggest impact, because they determine the girder and the choice between single and double girder. The hoist type (chain or rope), drives and controls, building or upgrading the runway, special environments and installation conditions also count.

For a quote, send us: capacity, span, height of lift, clear building height and how often the crane will be used. A photo or drawing of the building helps a lot.

Why GD?

  • In business since 1990, own factory in Lajosmizse with a 4,000 m² production hall (since 2011).
  • EN 1090 certified for steel structure fabrication.
  • Hoists and components from Stahl CraneSystems.
  • Design, manufacture and installation from one supplier.
